It means the children of someone are alike the parent in some way- either beliefs, or personality, or looks. For example, if someone is stubborn just like their mother, you might say "the acorn didn't fall far from the tree with that person"

Basically, in layman's terms, it means that offspring act similarly to their parents. Usually this is used when a child does something stupid (for lack of a better term) that a parent did (such as getting into a lot of fights or being a trouble maker in general). It can be used in a good way though like a smart child or one who was a hard worker or did well for themselves, like their parent.

Another way of putting it is "A child exhibits the same or very similar traits as his or her parents."

in persia they say:" the knife doesnt cut its own handle"

i think that means you need to get close to your roots, family, and your believe and your not going to far from your ATTITUDE.

It means that the child will never be THAT different from the parents. If the parents (the tree) are way bad etc then the child (acorn) will be bad as well because it has the same environment (the soil it falls into).

also it is cool metaphore because it will always be the same seed as the tree it came from so it wont be a totally different cast form its parents.

Acorns may not FALL far from the tree, BUT, a squirrel can snatch up that acorn, or a creek can come and take it to a completely different place, and bury it with completely different trees. Acorn may grow up and notice physical things similar to themselves and other acorn trees, but that does not MEAN they will be anything LIKE any other acorn trees.

The phrase is supposed to mean that you will always have similarities to your original family in some way at some time, BUT, when I noticed my tree, I did not like it, and CHOSE to be NOTHING like it, and did everything in my power to insure nobody ever put me back under that tree. My insides may be pure acorn, but you would never know it.

Like a son & a father.

For example, the father does something stupid, and the son does something stupid, people compare them. It means the son isn't that much different than the father.
